Artificial Grass Infill Replacement
Artificial grass infill is a product placed between the fibers/blades of artificial grass. Infill is crucial for maintaining your lawn’s natural appearance and feel. When you step on your artificial grass lawn and notice how comfortable and soft it feels, that’s your infill at work.
Over time, your infill can shift, and the infill levels can decrease as the material gets carried away by the wind, birds, or rough weather. Maintaining your infill is crucial to keep your lawn looking its best and performing at the highest level.
Revitalize Your Artificial Grass Landscape
Infill is a heavy component layer that helps keep the turf weighted to limit the risk of wrinkling and lifting. Without proper infill depths and weight, artificial turf is prone to movement throughout the seasons.
There are dozens of infill offerings for artificial turf, and most fall under one of these three categories:
- Rubber: Crumb Rubber, Coated Rubber
- Sand: Coated Sand, Dyed sand, Silica Sand
- Organic/Natural: Camofill, Zeolite, and Others
Artificial Grass Infill Replacement
Green-R Turf only uses organic, natural infill products for our installations and replacement services. We care about the environment and only use natural infill that meets safety requirements, enhances soil and water quality, reduces pollution, and promotes a self-sustaining cycle of resources. Our choice of infill is eco-friendly, water-efficient, odor-neutralizing, and, most importantly, safe for children and pets.
Core Roles of Artificial Grass Infill
Artificial grass infill is a critical component that acts as ballast to hold turf in place, keeps blades upright, and protects the backing from UV rays.
Structural Support & Aesthetics: Infill supports the base of the blades, keeping them upright and preventing them from matting or flattening over time. This maintains a lush, natural “freshly mowed” look.

Ballast & Stability: It provides the weight necessary to keep the turf from shifting, wrinkling, or lifting in heavy wind or during temperature-induced expansion and contraction.
Safety & Cushioning: Infill acts as a shock absorber, softening the surface to reduce impact forces during falls—a vital feature for playgrounds and sports fields.
System Longevity: It creates a protective barrier for the turf backing, shielding it from UV radiation, foot traffic, and wear and tear that can lead to premature failure.
Drainage & Hygiene: Proper infill allows water to percolate through the system, preventing surface pooling. Specialty infills can also inhibit the growth of mold, mildew, and bacteria

When Will I Need to Replace the Infill?
Artificial grass infill typically needs to be replenished or replaced every 18 months to 7 years, depending on usage, weather, and the type of infill used.
High-traffic areas or spots with significant runoff may require more frequent maintenance, while infill should generally be added when turf fibers appear flat or matted, or when the ground feels hard underfoot.
Key Indicators for Infill Replacement:
Flattened Grass Blades: If the turf fibers look limp or are not standing upright, they likely lack the necessary support from the infill.
Thinning Infill Levels: Infill can be displaced by heavy rain, high winds, or regular use. If you can see the backing of the turf clearly, it is time for a top-up.
Increased Hardness: The lawn feels less cushioned when walking or playing on it.
Pet Odor: If you have pets, infill may need to be replaced sooner (sometimes annually) if it becomes saturated with odor, even after cleaning
Landscape Applicationa:
Choosing the right infill is essential for the performance and longevity of your artificial grass, as it supports the blades, provides cushioning, and manages drainage.
Recommended Infills by Application
Playgrounds & Childcare: Acrylic-Coated Sand is the top choice for safety. It is non-toxic, dust-free, and infused with antimicrobial protection to resist bacterial growth where children play.
Pet Facilities & Dog Runs: A layered system works best for odor control. Experts suggest a base of acrylic-coated sand for durability and a top layer of Zeolite to neutralize ammonia from pet urine.
Pool Decks & Hot Climates: Organic Infills or specialized Cooling Infills are ideal for California’s heat. These can reduce surface temperatures by 30°F to 50°F when hydrated, making the area comfortable for bare feet.
Putting Greens: Fine-grade Silica Sand (30-50 mesh) is recommended to ensure a smooth, consistent ball roll. Coarser sands may cause uneven playability.
Residential Lawns: Silica Sand is the most common and affordable option for low-traffic decorative areas. For higher-traffic backyards, an antimicrobial-coated alternative that prevents compaction works best
